A Planned 1950s Town
Asphalt paving in Rolling Meadows starts with a 1950s subdivision. Harry D. "Curly" Brown, who founded Arlington Park, had assembled about 1,000 acres here in 1927. In the early 1950s Kimball Hill began building homes, the first residents moved in in 1953, about 700 homes had sold by 1955, and the city incorporated that year. Census estimates show about 27 percent of homes date from the 1950s, with a median year built of 1973.
Original-era driveways
Driveways from the first Kimball Hill years are now about seventy years old. Many have been overlaid more than once and sit above garage slabs or sidewalks; others have bases that settled long ago. Replacement with a rebuilt base resets heights and drainage.
Salt Creek
Salt Creek runs through the area, and settlers dammed it in the early 1840s. Low ground near the creek can stay wet, weakening the base under driveways in spring. We probe failing areas and add stone where needed.
Industry
An industrial park opened along Hicks Road in 1958, and Western Electric once employed about 1,500 people in the city. Commercial and industrial lots carry truck traffic and need thicker sections in drive lanes.
A compact city
Rolling Meadows covers about 5.6 square miles with about 9,780 housing units and 24,200 residents in 2020. Lots are modest, so access and equipment planning matter.
Commercial lots
Office parks, churches and retail lots need regular crack sealing, patching, sealcoating and striping. We phase work to keep them open.
What seventy years does to a driveway
The first Kimball Hill driveways were built when cars were lighter and fewer. Today the same driveways carry heavier vehicles, more of them, and decades of salt and plowing. Common results are cracks running the length of the driveway, a dished middle and an apron that has dropped. A new base sized for modern loads is the fix.
Small lots, careful work
With about 9,780 homes on 5.6 square miles, lots are compact. We plan where the dump truck and paver will sit, protect neighboring lawns and driveways, and keep the job tidy.
Working near the old racetrack land
Curly Brown's original 1,000 acres sat next to the Arlington Park site, now owned by the Chicago Bears. Whatever is built there, older Rolling Meadows driveways nearby will keep aging on their own schedule.
Hicks Road and the business corridor
The industrial park that opened on Hicks Road in 1958 still anchors much of the city's commercial pavement. Lots and loading areas there need thicker sections in truck lanes, regular crack sealing and restriping. We phase work around shipping and shift changes.
Salt Creek lots
Settlers dammed Salt Creek in the early 1840s, and homes near the creek can still sit on damp ground. Their driveways are at their softest during the spring thaw.
